Proportional staking means betting a fixed percentage of the current bankroll on each bet. If your rule is 2% per bet and your bankroll is 1,000, you bet 20. If the bankroll grows to 1,500, you bet 30. If it shrinks to 700, you bet 14. The advantage is adaptive risk management: stakes shrink during losing runs (protecting the bankroll) and grow during winning runs (capitalising on growth). The disadvantage is emotional — placing a 14 bet after a losing run feels like retreat, and some bettors override the system to chase losses.

For tennis betting specifically, I use proportional staking because the daily volume of opportunities is high enough to benefit from adaptive sizing. The formula is: stake percentage = (probability multiplied by odds minus 1) divided by (odds minus 1). For a bet where you estimate a 55% win probability at odds of 2.00, the Kelly stake is: (0.55 multiplied by 2.00 minus 1) divided by (2.00 minus 1) = 0.10 divided by 1.00 = 10% of bankroll.

Full Kelly is dangerously aggressive for tennis betting. A 10% stake on a single tennis match means five consecutive losses would halve your bankroll, and five-match losing streaks happen regularly even with a genuine edge. The standard adjustment is fractional Kelly — typically quarter Kelly or half Kelly, which reduces the volatility while preserving most of the long-term growth advantage. At quarter Kelly, the 55% edge at 2.00 becomes a 2.5% stake, which is sustainable through any realistic losing streak.

The practical challenge with Kelly is that it requires an accurate estimate of the true probability. If your model says 55% but the true probability is 50%, Kelly overestimates the optimal stake and you are overbetting. Ninety percent of tennis bets at Entain brands are in-play, per Entain Group data, and in-play probabilities are harder to estimate precisely because the match state is constantly changing. For pre-match bets where my model has been calibrated over hundreds of bets, I use quarter Kelly. My session limits are straightforward: maximum loss of 5% of bankroll per session, maximum of 8 bets per session. If I lose 5% before placing 8 bets, the session ends. If I place 8 bets before losing 5%, the session ends.
